LETTER: MP Ashton calls for action to stop Northern Manitoba COVID outbreak

Dear Dr. Roussin,

I am writing to you urging you to consider increasing the restrictions with respect to COVID-19 here in Northern Manitoba.

I am hearing from many communities that there is the real potential for a major outbreak in Northern Manitoba. We have already seen a number of community outbreaks and there is very real concern that this could spread to other communities very rapidly.

I would specifically request consideration be given to designating Northern Manitoba as a red zone with additional consideration put in place to restrict travel between communities in Northern Manitoba to essential purposes only, as evidence shows needs for restrictions.

The situation is becoming more concerning by the day. Communities including The Pas, OCN, Cross Lake and the four partner First Nations in the Keeyask project are struggling with COVID-19. We are seeing cases emerge in communities across our region. We are seeing strong evidence of community spread. The rise in cases in Winnipeg over the last month has clearly impacted our region.

We are all well aware of the vulnerability of our communities and our region as a whole. I would ask that we look to other jurisdictions within our own country and elsewhere to employ tools including short term targeted shutdowns and travel restrictions. We must ensure everything is being done by all levels of government to curb community transmission.

Northern Manitoba requires immediate and decisive action. We cannot sit by as COVID-19 spreads here. We need clear action reflecting the increasingly urgent situation we are facing.
