Red Sucker Lake Needs Full Support Now
NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) released the follow statement:
"Communities are very concerned about the rapid spread of COVID-19 and whether sufficient resources, including medical resources, are available to support the growing number of people who are sick with COVID-19.
I have been in contact with Red Sucker Lake, a First Nation now facing significant challenges with COVID-19. I commend the Chief, Council and the community for all they have done to fight the spread month after month.
People are telling me they are terrified of what is happening. The First Nation has called for assistance from the federal government, including military assistance. I have been advised by the community that a military mission will be arriving.
I have asked for an urgent meeting with senior officials.
The community has identified a full range of needs such as flying in cleaning supplies they have already purchased.
The crisis in Red Sucker Lake, like in Shamattawa, points to how quickly a spread of COVID-19 can occur. This crisis also highlights the critical need for medical resources to be made available in and outside the community.
This crisis also highlights the fact that First Nations must receive the vaccine they need and deserve on a priority basis."
