NDP MP Niki Ashton named member of the Progressive International council
THOMPSON - Churchill - Keewatinook Aski NDP MP, Niki Ashton, has been named as a member of the Progressive International Council.
Niki Ashton was a founding member of Progressive International, the organization launched in December 2018 at a gathering organized by the Sanders Institute to unite, organize and mobilize progressive forces around the world.
"It is an honour to be a part of this movement, a movement for solidarity and equality to build a better world. Whether it's the pandemic, climate change or growing inequality, it is clear that the crises we are facing, and will continue to face, know no borders. We're all in this together", said Ashton.
Progressive International focuses on connecting progressive movements across borders, sharing organizing tools from and to grassroots movements and publishing research and analysis from its members. Ashton plans on bridging the organization's work to Canadian progressive movements for social, environmental and economic justice.
"For decades, we have had to work against the politics of austerity, privatization, and deregulation," explained Ashton. "The legacy of this neo-liberal agenda. Growing inequality. Catastrophic climate change. And Seniors dying in private care homes due to COVID-19 while underpaid essential workers continue to be on the front lines without proper protective equipment or paid sick leave. "
"There is a better way. We will not remain silent, we will fight back, and we will build alliances around the world. Progressive International will build this network and I am proud to be a part of it. "
