NDP MP Niki Ashton calls for parliamentary study into hacking of CRA taxpayer accounts

It is unacceptable that the Liberal Government knew about the hack and refused to make it public.

Ottawa-The news that the CRA did not take this massive breach of Canadians’ personal data seriously and allowed fraudsters to steal millions from Canadians is shocking. The fact that this information was not made known by those who knew about it makes it even worse.

Canadians pay their fair share of taxes and trust Canada to do its job. Instead, Canadians have seen that under the Liberals, the CRA has failed to take tax fraudsters and cheats seriously from the failure to implement broad automatic tax-filing to their failure to take action on the Panama and Paradise papers.

There should be a parliamentary inquiry into the CRA’s mishandling of tax fraud and tax cheating. Canadians deserve a full account of what went wrong, how this happened and how we can ensure that this never happens again.
