LETTER: Vale shouldn't put their bottom line ahead of the health of Northern Manitobans
Dear Mr. Travers,
I am writing to you today to express, in the strongest possible terms, my concerns regarding your plans to bring in outside contractors from regions that require two-week self-isolation into Thompson without requiring them to self-isolate during the shutdown.
As I hope you are aware, Northern Manitoba has thus far avoided any outbreaks of COVID-19. This didn’t just happen. It is the result of incredible efforts by many Northern Manitobans over many months. These efforts have included difficult periods of lockdown and major travel restrictions.
As we prepare for a potential second wave, bringing in outside contractors from regions with high infection rates without any self-isolation requirements is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. Thompson is the hub of an interconnected north. If COVID-19 spreads in Thompson, it will have disastrous effects on all of us. It is not acceptable to put all our hard work at risk in pursuit of your bottom line.
I have heard from many constituents who have spoken out against this plan and am proud to raise my voice on their behalf. Mr. Travers, I implore you to rethink this plan and keep Northern Manitobans safe.
