LETTER: The Liberals need to be honest when it comes to the privatization of medical services
The Feds are considering privatizing COVID-19 quarantine sites
Dear Minister Hajdu,
It is with grave concern that I’m reaching out following a report by Radio-Canada that the federal government is exploring the idea of privatizing COVID-19 quarantine sites, including privatized ancillary transport, food, nursing, and security services. Let me be clear, quarantine sites should be motivated by one thing and one thing only, keeping Canadians safe and healthy.
This is part of a troubling trend of your government where creeping privatization of public services is becoming the norm. Whether it’s contracting delivery of personal protective equipment to Amazon, the Canadian Infrastructure Bank, and now this, this government needs to start being honest with Canadians whether or not it believes in the public services that so many Canadians rely on.
I unequivocally condemn any and all attempts by your government to privatize public services. Canadians are quite rightfully proud of our public health care system. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of expanding our healthcare system while keeping it in the public’s hands. Your government should be working to develop a national, publicly funded pharmacare system, not writing blank cheques to billionaires.
I strongly urge you to halt any and all plans to privatize quarantine services.
I look forward to your response,
MP Niki Ashton (Churchill--Keewatinook Aski)
