LETTER: Canada Post Must Improve Services in The Pas

Dear Minister Anand,

I am writing to urge your office to work with Canada Post to improve the postal service situation in The Pas. My office has received a growing number of serious concerns regarding the town’s state of the postal service. The Pas is in urgent need of an offsite location in the community and an increase in employment.

I have been relaying concerns heard from constituents and postal workers since December. Many across our region recognized the increased volumes that resulted from the holidays and the closure of nonessential shopping across our region. However, we are now into February and we are hearing a growing number of concerns regarding significant delays of not only parcel but also letter mail in The Pas. We have now heard from people who have had significant delays in receiving their medication, their pension cheques and other essential items. This is not acceptable and must be addressed.

I would like to acknowledge the incredible work of postal workers in The Pas. They are going above and beyond to get the mail to people. They need more support. There must be a proper assessment of staffing. It is clear that more permanent full time positions must be created in The Pas. Furthermore, it is also clear that that the community requires an offsite location locally at this time instead of mail being taken to another community. Options have been made known to Canada Post regarding an offsite location. A solution must be identified at this time in terms of both staffing and an offsite location.

The people of The Pas deserve reliable quality postal service like all Canadians. Canada Post workers in The Pas deserve the support necessary to do their work. The current situation in The Pas must be addressed and improved immediately. Given that the COVID-19 pandemic will be with us for some time as will the increased reliance on online services, the situation in The Pas requires actual solutions rather than short-term band aids.

I would like to meet with you and your office on this important matter. I look forward to swift action to address the situation in The Pas. I look forward to hearing from you.
