LETTER: Canada must defend passengers
Dear Minister Garneau,
We are very concerned to hear that Canadian airlines are refusing to refund passengers’ tickets. This is unacceptable. Canadians spent their hard earned money on travel that has had to be cancelled or postponed given the COVID-19 pandemic. We are asking on your Government to step in and ensure that airlines change course and fully reimburse consumers at this time.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been financially devastating for many Canadian families. It is truly outrageous that Corporations including airlines would hold back consumer’s money, and particularly callous at this time. We call on your office to guarantee that passengers be refunded for services that have not and will not be provided to them and remind airlines that they have an obligation to offer a refund to passengers. This is a matter of consumer rights.
Other jurisdictions, such as the United States and Europe, have enforced these obligations with respect to airlines in their jurisdictions. We are asking that your government extend the same rights to Canadians.
