Federal and Provincial Governments Must Step Up for York Factory Now

Thompson – Today, MP Niki Ashton and MLA-elect Eric Redhead called on Federal and Provincial Governments to step up for York Factory First Nation whose provincially run ferry is being held back further for maintenance, extending the isolation period for the community that relies entirely on the ferry at this time of year.

“York Factory depends on the ferry service so people can access essential services, buy groceries, essentials and gas. The community depends on the ferry service to bring in much-needed housing materials and fuel. Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation must step up and ensure that maintenance is sped up and alternate supports for transportation are made available at this time.” Said MLA-elect Eric Redhead.

“We are seeing a troubling trend from ISC whereby remote First Nations are not getting the supports they need when they lose a lifeline. It is clear Indigenous Services Canada must step up and work with York Factory to cover the significant costs being incurred at this time by the community. From charters to fuel – the people of York Factory cannot be penalized for scheduled maintenance gone wrong. ISC’s current response is entirely inadequate. The Federal Government must provide the necessary resources to York Factory now." said MP Niki Ashton

Both Niki Ashton MP and MLA-elect Eric Redhead have made clear the need for immediate action and indicate that the current situation also underscores the need for a permanent solution for York Factory, all-weather road access.
