Unfair Elections Act Passes
May 14th, 2014 - 4:27pm
In a mockery of Canada’s democracy government MPs voted unanimously to pass bill C-23, which they call the "Fair Elections Act".
In good faith our caucus proposed close to 100 ways to improve this widely-denounced bill but the government again let their ideology undermine what’s best for Canada.
Our caucus will continue to defend every Canadian’s right to vote.
The government rejected NDP amendments that would have given investigators the tools they need to crack down on electoral fraud, maintained Elections Canada’s independence from government, and restored the authority of the Chief Electoral Officer to encourage all Canadians to vote.
This bill has weakened our democracy and it’s Canadians who will suffer. I am disappointed that the Harper government has such contempt for Canadian voters.
Canadians deserve better.
