Statement on Take Back the Night in Canada
September 21st, 2012 - 5:18pm
As the Status of Women critic for the New Democratic Party of Canada, I would like to stand with Canadians participating in Take Back the Night marches all across the country to fight violence against women.
On the third Friday of every September, women and their allies join together and march the streets in communities all across Canada to send a message that no woman should be in danger when walking home alone. All women have a right to feel safe and live free from violence and abuse - in their homes and in their communities.
New Democrats recognize the work that we must all be part of in demanding the Federal Government work with us to eradicate violence against women. Instead of supporting an agenda aimed at gender equality, this Conservative Government has chosen to cut women's organizations and silence women's voices that tackle violence and discrimination.
New Democrats also stand with our Aboriginal sisters, and support the calls for a national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and a real plan of action. Canada can do far better.
Let`s continue to work together so years from now, no one will need to march because we will have achieved equality.
