NIKI ASHTON NAMED CRITIC FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 23, 2015

OTTAWA – Today, NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill) was appointed today by NDP Leader Tom Mulcair to serve as the Official Opposition critic for Aboriginal Affairs.

"I am honoured to take on the role of Aboriginal Affairs critic for the NDP.  I look forward to working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit people in their struggles, and our collective struggle to build a better Canada,” said Ashton. "The vision of building a nation to nation relationship, founded on respect for Aboriginal and Treaty rights and the pursuit of justice as defined by Indigenous peoples, will guide my work."

Ashton also thanked Jean Crowder MP (Nanaimo-Cowichan) for her tremendous work in this area.

Tom Mulcair has been clear that Aboriginal Affairs is a key priority for the NDP. This past summer, Mr. Mulcair announced that an NDP government would call a National Inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women within a hundred days of forming government.

“I am proud of the solid experience offered to Canadians by a strong team of NDP MPs. This is the team that will give Canadians a choice in the next election,” stated Mr. Mulcair.
