NDP MP ASHTON CALLS OUT SECOND CLASS TREATMENT OF FIRST NATIONS HEALTH

OTTAWA – During Question Period, MP Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) condemned an incident where a First Nation woman in Manitoba received second-class treatment. Kimberly Scott, an elder from Bloodvein was in Winnipeg for necessary care. She was put in a hotel with bed bugs. When her daughter asked for them to be moved, Medical Services told them they had to stay there and wait.

"Once again, the system is failing First Nation peoples. Healthcare is a treaty right. It is also a human right," said MP Ashton. "How many more Indigenous patients have to be treated like second-class citizens before the Liberals act?"

Ashton highlighted that these types of failures in Indigenous health happen too often in the North.
