NDP Forces Emergency Debate on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
September 19th, 2014 - 1:57pm
New Democrats were successful in forcing a debate on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in the House today. My colleague, Romeo Saganash, MP ( Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou) stood up to move that the house debate the shameful and systemic injustice of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The debate, while short, was enlightening as to the opinion of the Government to Indigenous Peoples concerns. The debate will resume as per the direction of the Government House Leader.
Indigenous persons do not need a renouncement of old funding, and agencies need operational funding not short term project based funding. Families need justice and action now. We need new funding, a genuine approach to support Indigenous leaders and families.
