MP REPORT: TIME TO EXPAND MEDICARE THROUGH NATIONAL PHARMACARE

Medicare.

It is one of Canada’s greatest achievements.

It didn’t just happen. It was the result of decades of struggle. Pioneered by Tommy Douglas and the CCF in Saskatchewan. Brought in as a national program in the 1960s.

Medicare covers many critical health services. The reality is, however, that there is more that needs to be done.

Millions of Canadians are faced with huge drug cost because of limited pharmacare coverage. There is no coverage for dental care. There is not enough in place for mental health care services.

We need national leadership on these key issues.

That is why our NDP Caucus has been fighting for a national pharmacare program. Study after study has shown it’s not only important for reasons of fairness and equity, it would actually save the medical system money. Far too many people end up with a worse healthcare outcome because they cannot afford the drugs they need to treat their medical condition.

We need more than talk. We need action.

Medicare. A Canadian achievement. Now is the time to complete it’s original vision and intent, starting with a national pharmacare program.
