CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT ABANDONING THE WEST: ASHTON - NDP blasts Harper over proposed cuts to WEDC
March 2nd, 2011 - 9:36pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Niki Ashton today accused the Conservatives of abandoning Manitoba and the other western provinces over funding cuts to Western Economic Diversification Canada (WEDC).
“The Conservatives are taking Western voters for granted. Stephen Harper thinks that because the big banks are doing, well we are out of the recession but we still see families, small businesses and communities suffering. The latest proposed cuts will have a direct negative effect on Manitoba,” said Ashton.
Ashton was reacting to the recently released budgetary predictions showing that the WEDC is slated to receive severe cuts, nearly 50% of its funding, despite regional economic development agencies being at the forefront of bringing Canada out of a recession.
“We know of the important role that Western Economic Diversification has played in supporting important economic initiatives in Northern Manitoba. These cuts would mean less money for jobs, less for infrastructure and less for trade and tourism,” said Ashton. “This Conservative Government is leaving Canadian communities in Northern Manitoba and across Western Canada in the cold.”
