CANADIAN STANDARDS MUST BE UPHELD IN NORTHERN GREECE MINE: NDP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 30, 2013

OTTAWA – Standing up in the House of Commons, NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill) demanded the Conservatives uphold Canadian labour and corporate standards at a Canadian-owned mine in Northern Greece.

"This week a delegation representing citizens of Northern Greece came to Canada to raise their opposition to the actions of Canadian gold mining company Eldorado," said Ashton. "The two projects the company is promoting in Greece risks serious environmental degradation and has led to major social unrest. Canada's image and reputation in Greece is suffering."

Canadian mining giant Eldorado announced plans to develop a mine in Northern Greece in 2011. Since then, many protests have occurred in the region, demanding answers to how this project would affect tourism, agriculture and employment.

"Do the Conservatives believe that Canadian mining companies - especially those receiving government support - should follow the same corporate social responsibility standards abroad as we have here in Canada?" asked Ashton.
