THOMPSON – NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill-Keewatinook Aski) says she's proud to have been appointed to the high-profile economic critic area of Jobs, Employment and Workforce Development. Ashton, who was critic for Aboriginal and Northern Affairs in the last Parliament, indicated that this critic area is of great importance to her riding and across Canada.

"Unemployment is a major challenge in our North and across the country," commented Ashton.“There is a rising concern about increasing rates of unemployment in many regions across Canada. We need to make sure that the new Government acts now to create good jobs and real economic opportunities for Canadians."

“I look forward to working with the NDP shadow cabinet to fight the unfair Trans-Pacific Partnership that is projected to cost Canada tens of thousands of jobs,” said Ashton. “As well as putting forward positive progressive ideas to create jobs in areas such as infrastructure and social enterprise, a key area of focus will be on apprenticeships, training and Employment Insurance.”

“There is an entire generation starting out in the workforce today – the condition they enter employment in will determine their ability to progress and move ahead.
