Ashton In Solidarity with First Nations calling on Harper Government to Act #IdleNoMore

Thompson - Today, First Nations people are gathering across the country as part of the #IdleNoMore movement. Niki Ashton MP (Churchill) has expressed solidarity with this grassroots movement opposing the Harper Government's attack on Treaty and Aboriginal Rights.

"First Nations people are seeing a roll back of their Treaty and Aboriginal rights, from an overall lack of consultation to the implementation of regressive bills like C-45, C-27 and others, to the unacceptable living conditions that so many Aboriginal people face," said Ashton. Ashton echoed the message of many involved in #IdleNoMore that despite Harper's apology to Residential School survivors, he has turned back on his commitment to build a better relationship with First Nations.

"First Nations people have had enough of the Conservative Government attacking their rights. The hunger strikes of Ray Robinson from Pimicikamak Cree Nation, Wilson Hartie of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and Chief Theresa Spence prove that First Nations want immediate action from the Prime Minister. Young people, and people of all ages and backgrounds, are supporting this call," said Ashton.

"I stand in solidarity with First Nations calling for Action through #IdleNoMore".
