ASHTON: CONSERVATIVES SHOW ARROGANCE ON WHEAT BOARD
October 17th, 2011 - 10:51pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA - Despite a clear message from Western Canadian farmers to keep the Canadian Wheat Board, the Harper Conservatives continue their steadfast commitment to dismantle the single-desk.
Niki Ashton MP (Churchill) rose in the House today pointing to the fact that Western voices are being taken for granted. The recent CWB plebiscite indicated a majority of farmers are opposed to the Conservative plan to dismantle the Wheat Board. Ashton made the case that the arrogance displayed is an indication of the way in which the Government is failing to listen to Western voices.
Ashton compared Harper's failure to listen to the West with that of Mulroney whose government was rejected in Western Canada following political stands that were seen as ignoring the Prairie provinces.
In question period, Ashton asked Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources and for the Canadian Wheat Board:
“When will the Prime Minister cut the arrogance, stop taking Western Canada for granted and save the Wheat Board?”
