ASHTON CALLS ON MINISTER MCKENNA TO CONTINUE SUPPORT OF EAST SIDE ROAD

Thompson – Niki Ashton, MP Churchill – Keewatinook Aski, is calling on Minister McKenna to support the East Side Road by acting on the indeterminate pause on the East Side Road project. Ashton has written to Minister McKenna to request a meeting to resolve this issue immediately.

“The timing of the decision is disappointing and questionable given we are currently in the middle of construction season,” Ashton wrote in a letter to Minister McKenna. “At a time of devastating job losses across the North, losing a construction season and future development of the East Side Road will further mount job losses and exacerbate the economic hardship Northern Manitoba is facing.”

This spring, the Progressive Conservatives announced the dismantling of the East Side Road Authority, the Crown Corporation mandated to build the all-weather road on the East Side of Lake Winnipeg, rolling the work of the authority under Manitoba Infrastructure. Despite the actions of the provincial government, Ashton hoped the Liberal government would stand by their campaign promise to fund the East Side Road.

“The East Side Road is integral for the social and economic well-being of Northern Manitoba and the constituents that I represent, said Ashton. “What Northern Manitoba communities need right now is an unwavering partner at the federal level committed to the completion of the East Side Road. Now is the time for the Liberals to put that commitment into action.”
