ASHTON CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE FEDERAL ACTION ON RISING FOOD PRICES IN CHURCHILL

Ottawa - As food prices at the Northern store spiked today, Niki Ashton, MP for Churchill – Keewatinook Aski, called on the federal government for immediate action.

"People in Churchill saw the price of basic food sky rocket overnight. They have asked for help from the federal government and nothing is being done." said Ashton.

"The Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs must step in immediately and authorize the application of the Nutrition North subsidy. The federal government must also support the proposal made by First Nations and northern communities to repair the tracks. Finally, the federal government must renationalize the Port and rail line."

Ashton indicated the fact that demands for action have been raised repeatedly over the last couple of weeks. "Churchill has given a lot to Canada. It's time for Canada to give back." said Ashton.
