ASHTON CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO SAVE NORTHERN JOBS

The Pas - The announcement of the closure of the mill in The Pas has prompted Niki Ashton MP (Churchill-Keewatinook Aski) to call for immediate action from federal and provincial governments.
"The closure of Tolko operations in The Pas is devastating for The Pas and a devastating blow for Northern Manitoba."
Ashton pointed out that the closure of the operation has a devastating impact across the region. Unlike in the past, the provincial and federal governments have not intervened to assist in the situation.
"Where is the federal government? Where is the provincial government? When the NDP was in government they worked with the town, OCN, the union and all stakeholders to find a solution. It was one of the few mills that survived at the time. It's no coincidence that no level of government is stepping up now. We need government to step in and protect Northern jobs."
Ashton called on the Federal government to come to the table to find a solution. "This coupled with the closure of the Port of Churchill is further devastating to our North. We have a federal government that says it cares about job creation and sits by while the North bleeds jobs. We have a provincial government that is betraying the North. It's time to change course."
